24 hours with... Chief Inspector Steve Hails, Northumbria Police
Date: Monday 30th July 2018
Why have you chosen to write about today? Today is my first day back to work following a week on leave.

Good morning!

What time did you wake up?

05:00

Why did you wake up at that time?

I always wake up early but at the moment seem to be waking up earlier.
Did you have a dream?

I think so – was possibly about my relationship with my wife (we are now separated)

Do you think today will be 'good' or 'bad' day? (use your own definition of these words to answer the question)

I thought today would be testing as my first day back in the office (dreading ploughing through so many emails etc in order to get back on top of work stream)

What are the first three things you do after waking up?

1. Make a cup of tea

2. Check work email

3. Check personal email / social media etc

Do you eat breakfast? If yes, what did you have?

Yes – Yoghurt and a small amount of granola plus a banana

What would be your perfect breakfast?

The above but with strawberries also

Is there anything that you have to do today but don't particularly want to?

Go to work

List five things that you do between 9am and noon.

1. Swam 1250 metres
2. Review email inbox / prioritise workload
3. Brief new member of staff as to role / expectations
4. Discuss media / interview opportunity with corporate communications
5. Discuss personal issues with colleague

Did you eat lunch? If yes, what did you eat?

Yoghurt / Apple / Banana

What would be your perfect lunch?

 Salad / Fresh Sourdough bread

List five things that you have done, said, thought, or that have happened between noon and 5pm.

1. Meeting with Staff to review project work
2. Compiled update on project work for review board later in week
3. Conducted work place risk assessment for member of staff (pregnant)
4. Discussed my forthcoming retirement date with a colleague (retire in April 2019)
5. Sent my son a message via Social Media

Do you eat dinner/tea? If yes, at what time?

I will eat dinner around 5.30pm

What do you eat?

Today will be baked potato and tuna

What would be your perfect dinner?

Chicken Tikka Masala curry, rice & garlic nan

What do you do with your evening (5-8pm)?

Will be visiting supermarket on my way home from work for groceries, making dinner, watch the news (BBC and C4)

Goodnight!

Do you have a 'get-ready-for-bed' routine? If so, what is it?

Usually have a cup of tea around 9pm. usually get ready for bed around 10pm (brush teeth / wash etc).  Listen to news on radio in bed & fall asleep to that.

What time do you go to sleep?

Between 10.15pm – 10.30pm

Is this when you want to go to bed? Or is it influenced by what you're doing the following day?

This is my preferred going to bed time.

Do you share your bed?

No

Which position do you tend to sleep in? e.g. foetus, starfish etc.

On my right side

Reflection

What was your favourite part of your day?

My early morning swim

What was your least favourite?

Work, work, work.

Did anything happen today that you'd like to change or re-do?

No – pretty content with my overall day

Did you 'learn' anything today? (use your own definition of this word to answer the question)

Nothing specific

Are you looking forward to tomorrow?

Yes

What do you have planned?

Hosting a recruitment event for potential new officers. All have a declared protective characteristic & this fact makes the opportunity enjoyable as it brings into the service individuals who are underrepresented and who may historically not have thought of the Police Service as an employer of choice.
