After losing my eight-month-old bunny; Evie on May 22nd I found a bracelet on Etsy from the store; EverelleCrafts (EverelleCraft - Etsy UK). I added ten charms all together with five each having the name of the pets I’ve lost these past eight years (Dolly, Pixie, Emmy, Gracie, and Evie) and the other five were the birthstones for each of them! When it arrived, I was absolutely over the moon with the quality and the final result of my customisation, and I actually shed a little tear when I saw all their names! I loved the bracelet so much that I actually got in touch with the store owner and after a chat, they offered a discount code exclusive to my readers/followers and I customised and ordered another three bracelets with one for each of the pets I have now (Luna, Ruby, and Tillie)! To share the discount code (which is exclusive to the bracelet linked at the beginning) and publicise the Etsy store, I put this blog post together where I’m going to chat about remembrance after losing a pet with a bit about the benefits of it, ideas for all sorts of memorials and methods of remembrance, and also some details on the Gracie’s Way (my pet bereavement project) resource that is super fitting and useful for this topic…
The loss of a beloved pet is one of the most
heart-breaking experiences many of us will ever face. Pets are more than
animals; they are family members, companions, confidants, and sources of
unconditional love. When they leave our lives, the bond we shared with them
does not simply disappear. Instead, it often becomes something we carry with us
in a different way.
Remembrance can play an important role in the
grieving process. While nothing can remove the pain of loss, finding meaningful
ways to honour and remember our pets can provide comfort, help preserve
cherished memories, and remind us that love continues long after a pet has
gone.
This guide explores some of the many ways you can
remember a beloved pet and create a lasting tribute to the special place they
hold in your heart.
Understanding Remembrance After Pet
Loss
Remembrance is deeply personal. For some people, it
may involve creating a permanent memorial, while for others it might simply
mean looking through photographs or sharing stories with family and friends.
There is no right or wrong way to remember a pet.
What matters most is finding an approach that feels meaningful to you and
reflects the unique relationship you shared.
It's also important to remember that remembrance is
not about preventing yourself from moving forward. Rather, it is about
recognising that grief and love can coexist. Honouring a pet's memory can help
us celebrate their life while acknowledging the impact they had on our own.
Why Remembrance Can Be Helpful
Many bereaved pet owners find comfort in
remembrance because it allows them to:
- Preserve
treasured memories.
- Celebrate
a pet's life and personality.
- Maintain
a sense of connection.
- Express
continuing love.
- Create
positive focus points during grief.
- Share
memories with others.
- Reflect
on lessons their pet taught them.
- Honour
the bond they shared.
Remembrance can be particularly valuable during
difficult periods such as birthdays (I actually did an Instagram post over on
the Gracie’s Way Instagram account about this, you can view it here),
gotcha days, anniversaries, and holidays when feelings of loss may become more
intense.
Creating a Physical Memorial
For many people, having a dedicated place or object
that represents their pet can be incredibly comforting.
Physical memorials can take many forms, including:
- Framed
photographs.
- Memory
boxes.
- Paw
print keepsakes.
- Engraved
plaques.
- Garden
memorials.
- Memorial
stones.
- Custom
artwork.
- Shadow
boxes containing collars, tags, or favourite toys.
- Keepsake
urns.
- Memorial
candles.
These items can provide a tangible connection to a
pet's memory and serve as a reminder of the happy moments shared together.
Wearing Your Pet's Memory
Some people find comfort in carrying a reminder of
their pet wherever they go. Memorial jewellery and accessories can provide a
discreet yet meaningful way to keep a pet close to your heart.
Options include:
- Bracelets.
- Necklaces.
- Keyrings.
- Paw
print charms.
- Engraved
jewellery.
- Custom-made
remembrance pieces.
One remembrance item that has become particularly
meaningful to me is my pet loss bracelet. It serves as a daily reminder of the
pets I have loved and lost and provides comfort during moments when grief feels
especially overwhelming.
I believe remembrance items can be powerful because
they allow us to carry a physical symbol of a bond that remains important to
us. They remind us that while our pets may no longer be physically present,
their influence on our lives continues.
Creating a Memory Box
Memory boxes are one of the most popular forms of
pet remembrance because they can be tailored to reflect a pet's unique
personality.
You might include:
- Photographs.
- Favourite
toys.
- Collars
or harnesses.
- ID
tags.
- Letters
written to your pet.
- Sympathy
cards.
- Certificates.
- Drawings.
- Fur
clippings.
- Other
meaningful keepsakes.
A memory box can become a treasured collection of
reminders that tell the story of your pet's life.
Writing About Your Pet
Writing can be a powerful way to process grief and
preserve memories.
You could consider:
- Writing
a letter to your pet.
- Recording
favourite memories.
- Creating
a journal.
- Writing
poems.
- Sharing
stories online.
- Writing
a tribute article.
- Creating
a scrapbook with written reflections.
Many people discover details and memories they had
forgotten when they begin writing about their pet, making it both a healing and
meaningful exercise.
Also, there’s actually an article over on the
Gracie’s Way website which is specifically about writing a letter to your pet: The
Ultimate Guide to Writing a Letter to Your Pet After They’ve Gone | Gracie's
Way – please take a look at that if you’re thinking of doing it.
Creating a Lasting Tribute
Some pet owners choose to honour their pets through
lasting tributes that continue to make a positive impact.
Examples include:
- Supporting
animal charities.
- Sponsoring
rescue animals.
- Volunteering
at shelters.
- Fundraising
in memory of a pet.
- Donating
pet supplies.
- Raising
awareness of pet bereavement.
- Supporting
veterinary causes.
- Creating
educational resources.
These acts can transform grief into something
positive and help create a legacy that reflects the love and compassion a pet
brought into our lives.
Creating a Memorial Garden
A memorial garden can provide a peaceful place for
reflection and remembrance.
You might choose to:
- Plant
flowers.
- Grow
a favourite plant.
- Add
a memorial stone.
- Install
a bench.
- Include
wind chimes.
- Create
a dedicated remembrance corner.
Many people find comfort in having a quiet outdoor
space where they can spend time reflecting on happy memories and feeling
connected to their pet.
Using Photography and Artwork
Visual reminders often become some of our most
treasured keepsakes.
Ways to preserve memories include:
- Framing
favourite photographs.
- Creating
photo books.
- Commissioning
artwork.
- Designing
digital collages.
- Producing
tribute videos.
- Creating
canvases or prints.
These visual tributes can help capture a pet's
personality and ensure that memories remain accessible for years to come.
Creating Remembrance Traditions
Remembrance does not have to be limited to physical
objects. Some of the most meaningful tributes involve traditions that help keep
memories alive.
You could:
- Light
a candle on special dates.
- Visit
favourite walking routes.
- Look
through photographs annually.
- Share
favourite stories with family.
- Prepare
a memory scrapbook each year.
- Donate
to a charity on your pet's birthday.
- Spend
time reflecting on happy memories.
These traditions can become valuable opportunities
to celebrate a pet's life and the joy they brought.
Helping Children Remember a Pet
Children often benefit from active remembrance
activities following pet loss.
Ideas include:
- Drawing
pictures.
- Creating
memory books.
- Writing
letters.
- Making
crafts.
- Planting
flowers.
- Creating
photo displays.
- Sharing
stories together.
These activities can help children understand grief
while providing healthy opportunities to express their feelings.
Remembering That Every Journey Is
Different
One of the most important things to remember is
that there is no single approach to remembrance that works for everyone.
Some people find comfort in jewellery or keepsakes.
Others prefer charitable activities, writing, photography, or quiet reflection.
Many people combine several forms of remembrance over time.
Your approach may also change as your grief
evolves. What feels comforting in the first few weeks may be different from
what feels meaningful months or years later.
Allow yourself the freedom to choose whatever helps
you honour your pet in a way that feels authentic and personal.
Not everyone will immediately understand why you
have chosen a particular way to remember your pet. Whether you've created a
memory box, planted a memorial garden, commissioned artwork, wear remembrance
jewellery, or support a charity in your pet's honour, you may occasionally find
yourself explaining your choice to others.
Here are five tips that can help with this:
1.
Focus on What It Means to You
When explaining your chosen method of remembrance,
start with its personal significance rather than its practical details. People
may not fully understand the specific tribute you've chosen, but they are more
likely to understand the emotions behind it.
For example, instead of explaining what the
memorial is, you could explain how it helps you feel connected to your pet or
why it brings you comfort. Focusing on the meaning behind your choice can help
others appreciate its importance.
2.
Remember That Every Grief Journey Is Unique
It can be helpful to remind others that grief
affects everyone differently. What feels meaningful to one person may not feel
meaningful to another, and that's perfectly normal.
Explaining that your chosen method reflects your
individual relationship with your pet can help others understand that
remembrance is a personal decision rather than something that follows a
universal rulebook.
3.
Share the Story Behind Your Choice
People often connect with stories more than
explanations. If you're comfortable doing so, consider sharing the memory,
experience, or reason that inspired your chosen tribute.
Whether it's a favourite photograph that inspired a
piece of artwork or a bracelet that reminds you of your pet every day, sharing
the story behind the remembrance can help others see the emotional connection
that makes it special.
4.
Be Confident in Your Decision
You do not need anyone else's approval to remember
your pet in a way that feels right for you. While some people may be curious
about your choice, others may not fully understand it.
Remind yourself that your method of remembrance was
chosen because it brings you comfort, meaning, or connection. Confidence in
your decision can make conversations easier and reduce the pressure to justify
your feelings.
5.
Use the Opportunity to Talk About Your Pet
Sometimes the best way to explain a remembrance
tribute is to talk about the pet who inspired it. Sharing favourite memories,
funny stories, personality traits, or lessons your pet taught you can naturally
help others understand why the tribute matters so much.
Many people find that discussing their pet's life
shifts the conversation from the remembrance item itself to the special bond
that inspired it, which is often the most important part of all.
Final Thoughts
Gracie’s Way has a number of supportive materials
available for bereaved owners and one of these is actually titled: The Remembrance
Exercises Resource, you can read more about it: The
Remembrance Exercises Resource | Gracie's Way and there’s also a Testimonial
about it: Owner
Testimonials | Gracie's Way. To request your free PDF copy of the resource,

The love we share with our pets leaves a lasting
mark on our lives. Although their physical presence may be gone, the memories,
lessons, companionship, and unconditional love they gave us remain.
Remembrance is not about holding on to grief
forever. It is about honouring a bond that mattered. Whether you choose a
memorial garden, a memory box, a photo album, a charitable tribute, a special
bracelet, or simply a favourite photograph on your shelf, every act of
remembrance is a reflection of the love you shared.
