AN AMAZON MENTAL HEALTH CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE FOR YOU | IN COLLABORATION WITH AMAZON UK

“When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.”

Jean Shinoda Bolen

Now, something a bit different to the typical Christmas Gift Guides that are likely all over the blogs you read/follow. I’ve said before, I recognise that I’m NOT Disordered readers don’t come here for Gift Guides and I’m 100% confident that there are Bloggers who do Gift Guides a hell of a lot better than I do! I do, however, also recognise that a Gift Guide like this – items and products which I believe could help your mental health – is so relevant and appropriate for readers and that it could very well prove to actually be helpful for a lot of people! So, I’ve scoured Amazon and have gotten creative with some insight and ideas into the variety of things that people find helpful for their mental health; but I recommend you consider purchasing something from this post for yourself. And know that this isn’t, at all, being selfish; it's about self-care and recognising the importance of your own emotional wellbeing, especially at this time of Year…

CREATING AN AUTUMN 2024 WARDROBE | IN COLLABORATION WITH ASOS

If you’ve been a follower of I’m NOT Disordered for a while, you’ll know that I’m a huge fashion and beauty fan and that they are actually the blogs I follow the most! And occasionally, I like to include some more light-hearted content because I’m fully aware how intense and emotional my content can be, so; I’ve teamed up with ASOS again (our last collaboration is here) to create an Autumn wardrobe! I recognise this post might not be for everyone – or anyone! – but I’m NOT Disordered is, first and foremost, for me(!) and I need to be able to produce content that I want and enjoy creating so, here goes...

MY 32ND BIRTHDAY WISHLIST

Anyone who’s read I’m NOT Disordered for a little while or who know me, will definitely not be surprised by this post! I talked a lot about my enjoyment and the importance of creating gift guides and wishlists through Blogmas 2022, and with my Birthday coming up (February 1st), it probably seemed like a no-brainer for me to produce content like this! I hope you like this and that it inspires ideas for gifts for someone you know too!

24HRS WITH... EM SHELDON | EMTALKS.CO.UK

Good morning!

What time did you wake up?

7.30am

Why did you wake up at that time?

I always set an alarm so that I can do a morning Instagram post and head to the gym plus get some emails done before the world starts

Did you have a dream?

I can’t remember! I can never remember my dreams!

Do you think today will be 'good' or 'bad' day? (use your own definition of these words to answer the question)

I always try and wake up assuming it’s gonna be a good day. There is good in every day and rainy days make flowers. Sometimes I wake up and external factors mean my day could be bad, but I try and see the positives in every day now. I read a book that said, ‘most of us focus on what’s wrong, and what we don’t have, rather than on what’s right and what we do have’ and I’m trying to wake up with that mind set

"If you haven't got the mindset right, you've got nothing" - A guest blog by Lindsey Wanless

I received a message from Aimee asking if I would write a guest post for her blog on the mental side of my journey of weight loss. At first I thought I don't know what she means... Mental side? Of weight loss? I never thought of weight loss as challenging you mentally but the days that followed Aimee asking me, I soon realised it was definitely a mental challenge more than a physical one the more I thought about it.

I've lost 7 and a half stone over the course of a year going from 20 stone down to 12 and a half stone dropping from a  size 22 to a 12.

Thinking about the main mental challenges I faced throughout my year I've had a lot of support but also criticism of my journey, which to me was the main mental side of my journey... Keeping focused even when facing negativity and criticism of the diet and exercise regime you are following which I did not expect to receive when people were also negative of my bad eating habits prior to this

I've overcome anything negative that is said by using this as ammunition in the gym, this is my body, my life and to me it's a healthier life, what can be so wrong about eating healthy and getting fit and staying that way?

Everyday waking up at 4:45am to prepare for my 5:45am class is mentally challenging in itself, you really need a strong mindset to get up and out the door when half your body is still in bed but half of you is out the door ...

As well as the tiredness of doing this whilst working full time with a 4 year old I've also had to overcome body confidence issues. When you've been a big girl for a long time you instantly still head to the bigger sizes in the store, you still want to cover up and you are still that unconfident quiet person inside although people expect more from you. They see you posing with your new figure and tell you to show it off... But they don't realise just because you have a new look does not give you all the confidence in the world ... You need to build it up... Just like muscle .. Only it takes a lot longer ...

I would say it's only recently that I feel my confidence is climbing I'm finally starting to be a more confident person, not covering up completely, enjoying clothes shopping, and starting to enjoy the new me.... Because that's effectively what has happened to me.. I'm a new person.. Same personality but different outlook on life. Completely different mindset.

I've always kept the same mindset throughout my journey, I've never waivered and that is what I believe has led me to my successful weight loss and keeping the mentality of "I can do this.. Don't give up when you've come this far"...

Do I see myself as a strong person? Not really... Maybe mentally yes to get this far and keep going even with negative support at times... Do I feel proud? Well not really because I'm still not where I want to be (which is another mental issue as most people think I look fine the way I look now ... But they aren't me in my head) ...

So there's me thinking that a weight loss journey isn't a mental journey... It really is... If you haven't got the mindset right you've got nothing ...and like anything else in life everything is all one mental journey ... But we can change our journeys in the blink of an eye... I just woke up one day and decided enough was enough I was going to change my life for the better... And anyone that's reading this if you are feeling like I was... Miserable all the time, hated going out, felt unsociable, unconfident ... Don't be like me, do something about it today, it's all in our heads... Only you can make a real difference to your life 😊 whether you be suffering with weight issues, depression, low self esteem etc just do it we only have one life ... Live it! X

PS: Anyone is free to message me if you want to chat, you can see my personal journey on my Facebook page and my ongoing journey with health and fitness to achieve my goal

24hrs with a Beauty and Lifestyle Blogger

24 hours with... Charli from Charli B ( www.charlib.co.uk)
Date: 6/3/2015

Why have you chosen to write about today?
Because it’s Mother’s Day and Mother’s Day is generally a good day for me.

Good morning!
What time did you wake up?
I was woken up really early this morning at 6:45… Urgh!
Why did you wake up at that time?
My mum stayed over and she has a habit of banging on my door screaming ‘Charlotte, are you awake?’ and waking me up.

Did you have a dream?
Yes, I have the same dream every night and have done for years. It consists of me being trapped in an apartment really high up seeing the world pass by below but I can’t leave.
Do you think today will be 'good' or 'bad' day? (use your own definition of these words to answer the question)
A bad day after the way I was woken up. Normally on Mother’s Day I am left to wake up on my own accord and I normally wake to a hand made card from my daughter with a little present… Sadly this wasn’t the case, it caused her and me to be quite upset.

What are the first three things you do after waking up?

I shouted, checked my phone and gave my daughter a hug.
Do you eat breakfast? If yes, what did you have?
Yes, I had two apple pop tarts.
What would be your perfect breakfast?
This is going to sound really lame but crunchy peanut butter on brown bread, sadly there was none in the house.

Is there anything that you have to do today but don't particularly want
to?

I know this is going to sound really bad but spend time with my mum, we have quite a volatile relationship which can put quite a strain on me. She was meant to go home yesterday after I took her out for her Mother’s Day treat but instead she stayed the night and now I have to change my plans for the whole day to fit around having her here. I don’t do well with an immediate change as it throws my whole day off and sends me into an instant meltdown.

List five things that you do between 9am and noon

I have a massive argument with my mum because I asked her if she used something, she flies off the handle at me accusing me of being like my sister and blaming her for everything. This happens just after 9. After that I just sit on my laptop and play Pet Rescue Saga, read some blogs, take a photo of my cat and have a conversation with my daughter.

Did you eat lunch? If yes, what did you eat?
I didn’t eat lunch today

What would be your perfect lunch?
A prawn and avocado salad would be so good right now!

List five things that you have done, said, thought, or that have happened between noon and 5pm

I started making dinner to keep myself occupied but my mind has been wondering because I just feel useless, I don’t understand why I can’t be happy like other people are and I get upset again that I have a stupid illness that consumes me sometimes, I’m also annoyed with myself that my mum is a massive trigger because she’s my mum and that upsets me.

Do you eat dinner/tea? If yes, at what time?

Yes, we eat at around 4 as it's Sunday.

What do you eat?

We have a roast dinner with all the trimmings.

What would be your perfect dinner?

What I had was my perfect dinner.

What do you do with your evening (5-8pm)?

My mum goes and we settle to watch a movie, I then make a snack at around 7 because we ate so early and everyone feels a bit hungry.

Do you have a 'get-ready-for-bed' routine? If so, what is it?

I have a mini routine which is just mainly take off my make up, tone and moisturise my skin and then I take all my medication that needs to be taken at night then jump into bed.

What time do you go to sleep?
I suffer really badly with my sleep, I sometimes don’t sleep at all or only get off to sleep at around 4/5am but I try to get myself into my bed by 11:30 so I can at least rest.

Is this when you want to go to bed? Or is it influenced by what you're doing the following day?
It’s when I want to go to bed.

Do you share your bed?

No, because I have such trouble sleeping I actually can’t share a bed and when someone is in the bed with me I can’t actually sleep at all.
Which position do you tend to sleep in? e.g. foetus, starfish etc.
I always lay on my front in a starfish position.

Reflect
What was your favourite part of your day?

When I knew the day was coming to an end and it would soon be over.

What was your least favourite?

All the shouting and stress.

Did anything happen today that you'd like to change or re-do?

All of it.

Did you 'learn' anything today? (use your own definition of this word to answer the question)
I learnt that I sometimes take good days for granted, I thought Mother’s Day was going to be smooth sailing due to it always being so and it wasn’t. I should always be prepared for the fact that my good days can turn into bad days and my bad days can turn into good, it’s just the luck of the draw and the people I’m surrounded by.

Are you looking forward to tomorrow
YES! I am so looking forward to  tomorrow, even if it’s a bad day and I am stuck in the deepest darkest pit just the fact that I shall be by myself is pure satisfaction to me.
What do you have planned?
I’m just going to see how I feel and take it from there.

'I have worked so hard at re-building my life' - A guest post by Sophie Bonner | 'Ad'

I didn't begin using makeup until I was about 15/16 and subsequently developed the belief that I couldn't be seen without it. Even if I were in hospital I'd have at least the base on. Wearing makeup does affect my confidence and so, I was eager to have Sophie work her magic on my face! The look she did was 110% out of my comfort zone, but I liked it. It was amazing to see how the contouring she did seemed to completely change my face shape!

Hi! I'm Sophie, a skin specialist, makeup artist, and brand new beauty blogger!
I am honoured to be writing a blog post for such an inspirational, successful blogger who I am proud to call my best friend. And I feel that this the perfect time to share not only my story, but my journey!

Right now, I am in love with the path I am walking and the cards I have been dealt, but I fought tooth and nail, day and night to get here. At school I was bullied to the extreme. So much so, I moved schools twice. I was ridiculed for being fat, and for being ugly. It came from all peers; boys and girls. The bullying was horrific; I'd walk into the girls toilets and 'Sophie is a fat slag' would be graffitied all over the walls, my hair was cut and once even spray painted, I had things thrown at my face and groups of the bullies would throw stones at the windows when I was at home. Inevitably, and as is common these days, the bullying spread to social media. There were pictures of me posted online so that people could call me fat and ugly in the comments and then a full page was created and was dedicated to people telling me to 'do the world a favour' and kill myself because I'd be 'better off dead. I was so low from the constant bullying that in time, I totally agreed with them. I was bullied because of my physical appearance and unfortunately, in lots similar cases the victim doesn't get through it; but with amazing support, I came through the bullying. I reached the other side.

My dad used to give me a pep talk every day when he was taking me to school. He used to say 'when these people are doing what they are doing to hurt you, just think of where you will be in 10 years, and where they will be. Because people who act like that in life will amount to nothing, and the people like you who show strength and battle the through will be the ones who make it'.

I have worked so hard at re-building my life after the bullying. I've been a homeowner since the age of 18 and I have worked full time to support myself since I was 16. I'm now 23 and I'm currently studying a mental health nursing degree whilst working as a makeup artist and skin specialist. These aspects of beauty are SO important to me, and I have so much passion and interest around this because without makeup, skincare and nutrition, I would never have had the confidence to do what I'm doing now. This is my incentive: to use my skills and experience in this area to help others to have a confidence boost. This keeps me going.
What do I want this post to achieve?
For someone who is going through what I went through and sees no way out; to see that they can be someone. YOU can be someone. You can inspire others, whether it be on a small scale, or a large scale. And do you know what makes my story even better? Those same people that once called me fat and ugly. Who threw things at me. Who told me I would be better off dead; are now coming to ME for advice. They're asking ME to help them. They seek inspiration from ME to help improve their own lives.

Having Quality Time At Home

I seem to write a lot about attending events but there are days when I have no appointments, no to-do list and no blogging to do, when I get to just spend the day at home. So, I thought it'd be nice to share with you guys my favourite things to do at home. Time at home, to yourself and for yourself is essential in maintaining a good mental health.

My favourite thing to do when I'm home is to spend time with my cat. She keeps me company and gives me someone to talk to! She's always around for a cuddle and her skittish and daft moments make me giggle!

My Mum buys all the magazines when they come out and so, once she's had a flick through, they all get passed down to me. This might sound weird but I find reading a book, like on my kindle is something to do before a nap or at nighttime, whereas magazines are more daytime reading! I love checking out the latest trends, tearing out beauty products I want to buy, getting inspiration for my home, and reading the dramatic true life stories.

I am a massive fan of Grey's Anatomy (what is playing on the tv in the photo below). I have seasons 1-10 on DVD and made the mistake of following Twitter during the broadcast of the live series in the US and witnessed a huge spoiler! Since then, I'm adamant to continue following the show so that I can see how the spoiler plays out. I've even bought season 10 twice because I was so excited! My favourite drink at home is to get some ice cubes from the freezer and some Diet Coke.

At least once a week I try to have a few hours of pampering at home. I'll paint my toe nails, put new false nails on my fingers, use a hair mask, put on a face pack and have a shower where I'll use a body scrub and put some tan on. In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT: the recommended therapy for Personality Disorders) this is known as self-soothing and is widely accepted as a means of maintaining a good mental health. I enjoy it. I guess I look at it as that for years I've hurt my body and put it through hell, so it deserves a little pampering and to be spoilt.

When it's dark and cold outside, I love to light all the candles and fairy lights in the sitting room, to make it smell good and feel cosy. My favourite scents for candles are fresh cotton and rose. I've tried the 3 wick candles from Primark but found that they don't spread throughout my home, probably because of their price. I've also found that Yankee Candles don't quite cut it so I use a variation of brands from T K Maxx. I've got a lot of fairy lights from Primark and Home Bargains, at the moment I'm liking the look of lots of lights gathered into a vase or similar.

Sophie,

I can't believe it's taken me so long to write this post.
I remember when I first met Sophie through another friend and immediately thought she was hilarious and so friendly.
The next time I saw her, was at a party. She was soooo drunk and everyone she was with were off enjoying themselves so I remember sitting in the toilet cubicle, holding her hair back. And she asked for a wet tissue on her head so I did that and literally after a few minutes she was like "what you doing? You're soaking me!!!" And so, I ended up going into her phone and called her Dad to come collect her. I remember putting her in his car and he thanked me. And we've been friends ever since!
Sophie is one of those friends who is so kind and generous but she isn't a doormat. She'll speak up, but she chooses her battles. She's one of those few people who light up a room when they walk in. She has this sparkle about her that means if you were in the same room, you would instinctively go and speak to her. And guaranteed you'd cry with laughter during the conversation.
Sophie, like most people, hasn't had the easiest of lives and has proved bullies wrong by losing weight and gaining confidence. To compare photos, you wouldn't believe it was the same girl. She always smiled but I think it was a surface smile; now it goes right to her soul. And you can tell.
She also got out of a bad relationship. This person tried to wear her down and I was so worried he'd succeed and change my Sophie and take her confidence and sass away. But like always, she came out on top. I remember when they split and Soph and I had a little party at their flat and she and some of the guys ended up running into the sea on Blyth Beach at stupid-o'clock in the morning/night. And upon getting back to her flat she ordered everyone to the bathroom to wash the sand off before going into her sitting room. Her ex returned in the morning to find boxer shorts in the bathroom and two hungover girls (Soph and I). She's now in such an awesome relationship that I see them as a relationship goal. Craig treats Sophie like a princess which is exactly how she deserves to be treat. And I think that through this, Sophie has learnt that her friends should treat her this way and it's given her the ability to recognise her self-worth and adjust her social circle appropriately.

On a deeper, more serious note; I remember walking through the dunes and sitting on the sand, watching the sea until the early hours of the morning - no alcohol in sight, and telling her what had happened to me. Telling her the darkest parts. To this day, she is the only person outside of professionals to know such details. And this is one of the many things that makes her so special and so important to me. This girl was the only person aside from my Mum to travel all the way to the hospital I was in, when she brought me a pink Christmas tree that I wasn't allowed because it had built in lights! My first Christmas in my forever home though, you'd better believe that was my tree! And she brought non-alcoholic cider that the entire ward were privileged to indulge in after special permission. I also remember heading for a carvery with her followed by two staff who were wished 'good luck' by another staff as we giggled ourselves silly!
Sophie has been with me through thick and thin and I'd like this post to be just a small thank you for everything she has done for me.
Now see what I mean about the sparkle when you look at her beautiful face below.
And Sophie? If you read this, thank you. And I love you. Here's to many more drunken nights and meaningful chats together.
Xoxo

Confessions of a Blogger

Becky from BeckyBedBug: When I was at Uni, I made two very good friends in my halls. We discovered - by accident, that the one girls key opened the others' door. One weekend the other girl went home and my remaining friend and I had no money to go out. So we used her key to enter our friend's room, polished off the vodka and filled it with water. When she returned and asked if we thought her vodka tasted like water, we told her that if you leave it open too long the alcohol evaporates. She believed us.

Rebecca from stopbeinginappropriatewithyourbread: I narrate my life in song!

Frankie from CrazyBlondeGal: I had an asthma attack last year after a night out but refused to call A&E because I didn't want to 'inconvenience' them

Safia from MyGriffinWay: I got cramp in my leg at Yoga and I'd forgotten to shave my legs and the hot yoga instructor has to give me a leg rub!

SugarBash: My life depends upon the low 'sock bun' with no shower and dry shampoo giving me a few extra minutes of sleep

Anabel from MascaraandMaltesers: I dated two men who were friends and on the same football team. I somehow managed it for a few months!

Noor from NoorsPlace: My celebrity crush is Derek Hale from the show Teen Wolf.

FBMH: Q&A with Katie from 'Knelt'

1. Do you ever blog about personal aspects of your life?

Yes quite often! I love seeing snippets of other bloggers lives, and I love sharing bits of my own life. It breaks up the monotony of review after review and shows the person behind the blog

2. What do you gain from doing this?

Well, happiness I guess. I’m doing it because I want to, so that can’t be a bad thing!

3. Why did you volunteer to be part of #FBMH?
There still seems to be a lot of stigma around mental health, and anything I can do to help combat that I will do. My partner suffers worse problems than I do and I strive to understand those problems as best I can to support him in the best way possible.

4. How do you feel about mental health stigma?
Frankly? Pissed off - why is it seen as such a negative thing?!

5. Do you actively campaign for better mental health services or to get rid of stigma?

I should do more than I do if I’m honest, but I also face the stigma head on whenever I see it. There was this one time I was on the bus and a passenger moved seats. They had been sitting next to a man who had obvious Tourette's, who then looked extremely embarrassed and upset, so I moved seats to sit next to him. I did it without saying a word, but hopefully the man appreciated the fact that he was being accepted by someone rather than rejected, and hopefully the other passengers got the message that people who suffer illnesses we don't understand often need the acceptance of society the most.

6.Why did you begin blogging?

I began blogging because I really missed writing after I finished my literary based degree. I read lots of blogs already and I just thought, if they can why can’t I?

7. What made you decide to blog about beauty and fashion?
They are just things I really love, and it makes sense to write about things you love to me - how else can yon a bus when a man sat next to a passenger who had obvious Tourettes moved seats, tutting as they did so. The Tourettes sufferer was clearly upset by this, so I moved seats to sit next to him. I never said a word, but by sitting there I made the point that this person was not to be treated so negatively because of what they suffered.

8. How did you find writing your piece for #FBMH ?

I found it really therapeutic, it was a big help to get it all down on paper!

9. What has been the best moment in your blogging career so far?
Erm, it’s hard to pick out an individual moment to be honest, I enjoy it all so much! I wrote an article for an online magazine that had such positive feedback - whilst it wasn’t my own blog I was super proud of the reception that it got!

10. What has been the worst?

In some ways, when I started over from scratch it felt like the worst thing ever. I did this because of personal reasons (which are explained on my blog if you’re that interested!), but honestly, that ‘worst’ moment? The best thing I ever did!

11. What advice would you give someone just beginning to blog?
Enjoy it, and stay true to yourself!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks for letting me get involved Aimee!

FBMH: Q&A with Katie from 'Gold Dust'

Why did you begin blogging?

I moved across the country and knew nobody. Blogging was a good way to fill in time and meet new people.

What made you decide to blog about beauty and fashion?

I wanted to learn more about skincare and make up!

Do you ever blog about personal aspects of your life?

Yeah, I've tried to make my blog more "lifestyle" recently.

If yes, what inspires you to do this?

Anything! Sometimes it's something I've baked or a place I've been. Or other times I will blog about how I'm feeling or what's going on in my life.

What do you gain from doing this?

It's nice to have a community that doesn't judge!

Why did you volunteer to be part of #FBMH?

I think it's good to speak out about MH. I've found by doing so it makes me realise I'm not alone!

How do you feel about mental health stigma?

I'd like to think it's getting less and less. However I was embarrassed and anxious about what people would say before I spoke out. People have been really supportive.

Do you actively campaign for better mental health services or to get rid of stigma?

I actually ran a 10k a few years ago for Mind

If yes, by doing what?

Alongside charities, as well as openly discussing MH.

How did you find writing your piece for #FBMH ?

Really easy!

What has been the best moment in your blogging career so far?

Meeting new people and getting opportunities i never thought I'd get!

What has been the worst?

Sometimes there is bitchiness and negativity on social media. I try to stay clear of that!

What advice would you give someone just beginning to blog?

Be yourself! And enjoy it!

Anything else you’d like to add?
